The â€Å"Socio-cultural factors affecting the quality of English language learning of selected first year CED students of AUF† is the researchers’ expected output for this particular topic on language research.STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This language research study aims to determine the socio-cultural factors that affect the quality of English language learning of first year College of Education students at Angeles University Foundation through a survey to be followed by an interview of selected respondents if ever the survey would elicit questions that could affect the data gathered by the researcher. The interview would pursue for further clarifications on the answers to the survey.The survey would include questions that are to fall on the following topics: 1. The respondent’s view on their learning of the English language (are they enjoying their present status in the learning of the language) 2. Recall on previous experiences prior to learning the language and its impact to their English language learning. 3. Their view of their prior knowledge on the English language and how they could relate it to their first language. 4. The importance of their culture in the accumulation of ideas on their learning of the English language. 5.The respondent’s perspective on having good relationships with their classmates to include these experiences to their English language learning. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY A good research according to Flood et. al. (2005) gives out concepts or ideas that teachers in the academe could ponder on. Its purpose is not to recommend solutions that would directly answer the teacher’s problem on his or her classroom. Rather it aims to make a teacher’s instructional decisions more intelligent and enhanced. Angeles University Foundation caters international students in their curriculum.The diverse number of students are too numerous to count that the environment of the campus is depicted to be a community of people from different countries. The culture that these international students brings to the classroom are said to be rich that if educators and other members of the academe would include them in discussions, meaningful life experiences are promoted like â€Å"genuine internationalism and fostering intercultural learning† (Carroll and Ryan, 2005 p. 75). SCOPE AND DELIMITATION This study is focused on the socio-cultural factors affecting the quality of English Language Learning amongst selected first year CED students of Angeles University Foundation. There are different socio-cultural factors that could affect the English Language Learning and these are identified through analys is of different theories of learning, review of related literature and studies on socio-cultural factors affecting language learning, and conducting of survey and interviews. Through identifying these factors, the researchers could come up with recommendations in solving the problems of curriculum stakeholders, particularly the teachers and students. The subjects of the study are the first year CED students. They are the researchers’ chosen subjects particularly because they are most likely to be still adjusting to the new school environment, specifically the foreign students. Having a different background when it comes to their culture, irst year foreign students, especially those who are fresh from their motherland, would have a hard time learning the language (unless the learner had had formal schooling in a country in which the English language is given a bright spot in its curriculum). The Filipino students, on the other hand, since it is their first time in college, may also be having a hard time adapting to the new environment and interacting with their colleagues. The researchers agreed upon having the first year section B CED students as t heir respondents due to the reason that the population of this section is larger when it comes to foreign (e. Koreans) and also Filipino students. This is confirmed by the College’s Assistant Dean, Dr. Alita G. Agapay, in response to a correspondence electronic mail sent to her by the researchers. On the other hand, the method to be used in this study is the qualitative method of research. Flood (2005) identified, in his book Methods of Research on Teaching the English Language Arts, qualitative method as exploratory in nature as it anticipates discovery on possible important aspects that may not have been noted yet.The researchers aim to explore on the meaning of language learning to its participants. The participants’ points of view, thoughts and feelings, and why they think, feel or behave are noted. This method’s focus is on â€Å"small numbers of participants and thorough understanding of small, complete units of social interaction† (p. 7) which are later on analyzed, interpreted and categorized for classification of data. This study is conducted at Angeles University Foundation, Angeles City, Pampanga.Starting from December 2010 till March 2010, the study is to be conducted, wherein the researchers are given ample of time to undergo the different phases of their paradigm of the study. Research Instruments The researchers’ instrument to be used in the process of the study is the interview tool. It is in this instrument that the researchers would include questions that are focusing on the respondent’s perspective on the importance of their social and cultural backgrounds in the determination of their English language learning. The specific questions are to be confirmed by the group’s research adviser and other experts in the field of English to determine the whether or not the questionnaire needs to be eveloped further. Revisions and finalization of the questionnaire needs to be affirmed first by the mentioned people, so as to refine the reliability and validity of the study, before the questionnaire is administered to the chosen respondents. The data gathered will be analyzed, interpreted, calculated, and classified according to categories that would fit the data. The observations of successful leaders that Machiavelli made are still apparent in the modern world and prove that history truly does repeat itself. Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary leader, is a perfect example of a leader that is considered effective based on Machiavelli’s principles. Fidel Castro is â€Å"Machiavelli’s Cuban Prince†. (1) Chapter 17 of The Prince deals with a common question for a leader: What is better, to be loved or feared? Machiavelli states that people will easily be disloyal to the love for their leader, but if you are feared, it will be much more difficult to quickly challenge a leader that is feared. Fidel Castro’s leadership techniques prove that he very much tries to gain the affection and love of his people, but ultimately fear is what gives him power over them. In 1961 1,400 Cuban exiles, supported by the CIA, made an ineffective shot at invading Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. (2) Castro’s military assure his physical power over Cuba and Castro has been expert at using the customary Cuban fear of the â€Å"Miami Cubans† and the detested â€Å"Americanos† to overpower his people and keep them aligned. His people fear him and the power he has over them is what in the long run keeps him with that power. This same trait is what was discussed by Machiavelli in Chapter 17 and proves how Castro exemplifies what Machiavelli considers to be an effective leader. Machiavelli’s whole purpose of the book was to teach leaders how to rule and how to keep that power to obtain an effective regime and Castro is one example of the book holding truth. This gives the book purpose and to an extent, proves that some of the traits Machiavelli discusses are very apparent in modern day leaders. With Castro as an example, this book proves that this trait of â€Å"being feared† is very much true in any regime. Castro was able to successfully rule over his people because they were so terrified of him, hat it demonstrates the exact traits Machiavelli deemed to lead to an effective leader. Had Castro gone with the â€Å"love† route and have his people love him instead of fear him, he would not have been as effective, and his whole regime would be very different. Furthermore, Castro has taken a significant amount of actions that are similar to those of Machiavelli’s â€Å"tips† in his book. Castro enchanted his subjects with pro mises of countless wealth in a future that never arrived; new restrictions were forced on consumption, new sacrifices required, greater amounts of â€Å"discipline† demanded. Taking shrewd actions are more important to Castro than keeping his promises to the people, which is exactly what Machiavelli stated in his book, one sees from the experience of our times that the princes who have accomplished great deeds are those who have little for keeping their promises and who have known how to manipulate the minds of men by shrewdness; and in the end they have surpassed those who laid their foundation upon honesty. (3) Castro kept very little, if any, of his promises and was still able to have full control over his people. The whole point of Machiavelli pointing out that promises shouldn’t always be kept was to prove that you can be a successful and effective leader as long as you are able to manipulate the people to think you keep your promises. Castro was very well at doing so, and is able to substantiate that this trait from Machiavelli’s principles is what help keep an effective reign. The choice of army a state must build, is another example of a lesson that Castro â€Å"borrowed† from Machiavelli. Machiavelli stated that a greedy army is never sufficient, as well as efficient for the state. Likewise, Castro built an army that followed all the beliefs Castro had dictated and was able to control his people past â€Å"normal†, to the point where he could â€Å"brain wash† them into thinking anything he believed in. (4) In addition, Machiavelli always repeated and emphasized the need to imitate the fox and the lion. Castro specialized in this belief by always being ferocious for his enemies and critics. He was able to use his army to give him more power and to keep his people standing right behind him, and supporting him. Machiavelli’s principles can be seen in the way Castro controls Cuba. The qualities Machiavelli states about army are very relevant to the way Castro rules and show how these traits are what create and obtain effectiveness in a leader. These similarities have been applicable to the categorization of Fidel Castro as the â€Å"New-Era Machiavellian Prince†. However, the most important of Machiavelli’s influence lies in Castro’s ability to absolutely excel in engaging his physical, political, and psychological control over the Cuban People. In addition, he snatched every business that was previously under the American influence and then was able to strengthen connections with the Soviet regime. In the end, all his actions are justified by the means of Castro attaining power in every single way possible to chase a grander goal. Almost all of Castro’s actions are clear to exemplify the nature of Machiavelli’s tactics. He cared little of the people seeing him as â€Å"unfaithful† and did whatever it took to have a successful government. As this is a rather ambiguous question, I think it is important to first clarify what I think makes an effective poem. The most obvious aspect of a poem that makes it effective is language, imagery and some sort of rhythm. However, this does not make a poem complete. For someone like myself who does not appreciate poetry much unless it evokes some sort of emotion in me, would definitely think that it is emotions, which are integral in making poems successfully effective. Another aspect of a poem, which makes it powerful, is its ability to revive the readers imagination and amuse them.A good poem makes you feel like youve been there before, takes you back to a feeling you have had before, a situation in your life that you have experienced or want to experience. Larkins poems are known to be depressing but to what extent are they depressing, is this a negative trait and does it stop them from being effective? To explore this idea I will look closely at two of Larkins poems, Ambulances and A study of reading habits to discuss the techniques and ideas Larkin uses which make his poems depressing and effective.I chose to explore A study of reading habits because I think it is one of Larkins poems, which amuses me the most. Larkin uses rather colloquial language in his poems, which immediately involves the person reading it. He does this from the very beginning of the poem getting my nose into a book and Had ripping times. This technique interests the read er and familiarises them with the situation, which is effective in that it is easy to read if we can relate to the poet. In this poem Larkin is talking about a topic, which most people reading his poem would most definitely be able to identify with reading.It is quite a lighthearted poem and this is due to the fact that Larkin is talking about the familiar storylines of the novels he has read which usually include well-known cheesy fiction with characters like the dude/ Who lets the girl down before/ The hero arrives and the chap/ Whos yellow and keeps the store. Larkin is saying how after all his reading hes just one of those pitiable characters and not the Evil, exciting character with the cloak and fangs. This is quite amusing because we can relate to this.Aspiring to be the heroes and exciting, popular, attractive characters is something most readers have in common. The second stanza in particular is exciting to read as it depicts a dream created from the books he reads, that p eople have to be the evil powerful villain. On the other hand the poem could be viewed in quite a sinister and perhaps a depressing way. The image of the ripping times in the dark, clubbing women with sex, and breaking them up like meringues portrays an image of his reading making him aspire towards sexual violence which gives a negative, fearful feeling to the reader.The two characters he mentions to be familiar with are the chap Whos yellow and the dude who lets the girl down, and not the exciting villains or heroes which is depressing in the fact that he has realised that his role in the world is like that of these boring, failures. At the end of the poem he seems to scorn the books because of his bitter, painful realisation that he cant be one of the characters in his fantasies when he concludes, Get stewed:/ Books are a load of crap Contrastingly and on a more amusing note, this final line could also be amusing in that it is quite ironic for a poet to say that Books are a load of crap.The slang use of words, make him seem fed-up like a common person who finds something he reads difficult to comprehend. Ambulances is rather contrasting to A study of reading habits in both its content and effect. The poems central theme is that of death. Larkin again involves the reader, firstly by talking about a subject universally linked with every person and in the first stanza says that ambulances come to rest at any kerb/ All streets in time are visited It paints some rather morbid images to create the scene of a dead person being carried out of their home.Larkin describes the ambulance as being Closed, giving the sense of a coffin, untouchable and cannot be entered by choice but only with the invitation of death. It is also compared with confessionals, which gives a death of something sacred and very private. The ambulance drives into a street, which contrasts to itself, having children about and the image of mothers walking up and down. The different dinners, paint s an effective image of all the different lives progressing in each of the different houses on the street.Putting the dead body in this environment is effective in that it includes all readers into the situation, as all people have experienced death around them. Larkin mentions the wild white face which is particularly moving as it contrasts with the richness of the Red stretcher-blankets and the colours that could be imagined to be associated with the children. Larkin morbidly emphasises our dehumanisation after we die as the body is depicted as a lifeless object to be stared at with no power, comparing the body to luggage carried in and stowed.Theres a rather sinister feeling created by this imagery, it makes the reader quite sad that this is what life amounts to in the end, and that everything that we worry about is pointless. The third stanza of this poem is particularly depressing as Larkin comes to a sort of realisation of the emptiness in the lives we live, in all we do, the things that matter so much to us in our lives today, are in effect empty, as the time comes closer for the ambulance to come and carry us away.The idea of death is present in a lot of Larkins poetry and I think this is effective as he is showing us that the one thing that we avoid and mask with unimportant fancies is just a part of life and a part of the vital cycle that keeps life going. Another aspect of Larkins poems that make them interesting is that they criticise many human activities and behaviour like in faith healing where Larkin looks at the extent to which people go to feel a kind of love or hope, talking of their responses to the healing as universal and fake.The prime example of this I can think of is his poem, The Whitsun Weddings, which shows several people going through the same process of getting married, believing that it is something individual and special, when in fact every wedding is the same. It shows that peoples lives are all a train journey, going the sam e route and then ending at the same point. To conclude I dont agree with the statement that Larkins poetry is too depressing to be effective as I think that it is its morbidity which makes it so successful.A poem, which can evoke strong emotions in the reader, is effective, and Larkin shows that he is capable of doing so. He uses images and language to create saddening and sometimes revolting images, being open about the imperfections of life. Black Boy1 Frederick Douglass and Richard Wright wrote memoirs recounting their experiences with racism. Though their writing styles are completely different from one another, the subjects they discuss are similar. After reading each piece they have both made me empathize with their feelings, however different their lives are from mine. Their memoirs, My Bondage My Freedom and Black Boy, provide insightful images of the racist and cruel treatment these writers experienced. Despite all of their stylistic differences, after both excerpts I understand the passion they felt for the hatred they endured. The variation of the writers’ use of quotation marks provides insight to the degree of formality that Wright and Douglass express. Wright uses quotations frequently and exclusively in dialogue. Included within the quotes are the unjust requests, unfair news, and degrading remarks that infuriated him. â€Å"‘Hello, Ned. What’s new?’ I asked. ‘You’ve heard, haven’t you?’ he asked. ‘About what?’ ‘My brother, Bob?’ ‘No, what happened?’ Ned began to weep softly. ‘They killed him,’ he managed to say. ‘The white folks?’ I asked in a whisper, guessing. He sobbed his answer. Bob was dead; I had met him only a few times, but I felt that I had known him through his brother (p. 382).† I feel as though I can hear the words just as he did.
